"Nowhere in New York City can you find anything like [The Lab]." (Chris Maresca, Puppet Artist)
St. Ann's Warehouse experimental haven for artists developing interdisciplinary projects for puppet and object theater, The Lab, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. Under the direction of the new Lab Director's Tom Lee and Matt Acheson, participating artists and their collaborators meet weekly over a period of nine months to develop projects, share puppetry elements and other design and technical ideas, discuss plot structure and character development, and work on narrative. Moderated critical discussion follows each presentation.
Each spring, St. Ann’s Warehouse presents LABAPALOOZA! A Mini- Festival of New Puppet Theater from The Lab, showcasing the works developed over the year.
Past participants have included composers, writers, filmmakers, designers, a children’s book illustrator, an architect, a marine biologist, and a veterinarian. Artists work with objects, shadows, computer graphics, and water. They animate films, work in miniature and on a grand scale. The variety over the years has been mind-boggling.
